India’s Electric Scooter Revolution: How Fast Is the Industry Growing?

Sep 2
3 min read

India is witnessing a major transformation in personal mobility, and electric scooters are emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments of the automobile industry. Rising fuel costs, increasing environmental awareness, improving battery technology, and supportive government policies are encouraging more Indians to consider electric mobility.

The growth is already visible in sales numbers. According to FADA data, electric two-wheeler retail sales reached about 14.02 lakh units in FY2025-26, up 21.8% from 11.51 lakh units in FY2024-25. (BikeWale) The momentum has become even stronger in 2026. Electric two-wheeler sales crossed 10 lakh units by July 6, 2026, representing approximately 54% year-on-year growth over the comparable period. (Autocar)

Why Are Electric Scooters Becoming Popular?

One of the biggest reasons is the potential for lower running costs. Electric scooters generally require less routine mechanical maintenance than conventional petrol two-wheelers, while electricity can be cheaper per kilometre than petrol depending on local tariffs and usage.

Another important factor is convenience. Modern electric scooters increasingly offer features such as connected displays, smartphone integration, navigation, multiple riding modes, regenerative braking, and improved battery-management systems. As technology improves, consumers are becoming more comfortable with EV ownership.

Government Support Is Accelerating Adoption

Government policy is also playing an important role. The PM E-DRIVE scheme was introduced to accelerate electric mobility through demand incentives and charging infrastructure. The scheme initially targeted support for around 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers, alongside investments in charging infrastructure. (PM India)

The PM E-DRIVE programme has subsequently been extended for several EV segments through March 31, 2028, strengthening the policy environment for continued adoption. (PM E-DRIVE)

Competition Is Making the Market Stronger!

India’s electric scooter market is no longer limited to a handful of startups. Established automobile manufacturers and dedicated EV companies are competing with new products, better technology, wider dealer networks, and improved after-sales support. During the first half of 2026, TVS, Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp and Ather accounted for nearly 96% of incremental electric two-wheeler registrations, according to FADA data reported by Business Standard. This competition is beneficial for consumers because it encourages manufacturers to improve range, charging speed, reliability, safety, design, and pricing.

What Does the Future Look Like?

India’s electric scooter industry appears to be entering a significant growth phase. Charging infrastructure is expanding, battery technology continues to improve, and consumer awareness is increasing. Government initiatives are also encouraging domestic EV manufacturing and infrastructure development. (PM India)

While challenges such as charging availability, battery costs, resale value and long-term reliability remain, the overall direction is clear: electric scooters are moving from an alternative mobility option toward a mainstream choice for Indian consumers.

With millions of Indians using two-wheelers every day, the opportunity for electric scooters is enormous. The coming years could therefore see EVs become an increasingly familiar sight on Indian roads—and potentially transform the country's two-wheeler industry.
